17 October – International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on 17 October.
  • The day is dedicated to creating awareness and promoting global measures to prevent poverty.
  • Theme 2023 – Decent work and social protection: achieving dignity for all
  • The roots of celebrating this day go back to 17 October 1987, when a gathering in the Trocadero in Paris declared poverty a violation of human rights.

S Jaishankar to co-chair the 18th India-Vietnam Joint Commission meeting

  • External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar co-chaired the 18th India-Vietnam Joint Commission meeting in Hanoi with his Vietnamese counterpart Bui Thanh Son.
  • Discussions included cooperation in political, defense and maritime security, judicial, trade and investment, energy, development, education and training, science and technology and cultural sectors.
  • Dr. Jaishankar, along with his counterpart, also jointly unveiled commemorative stamps celebrating 50 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Vietnam.

Jharkhand Chief Minister unveils mascot ‘Juhi’ for Women Asian Champions 2023

  • Honorable Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren and President of the International Hockey Federation Dato’ Taib Ikram have unveiled the trophy and event mascot ‘Juhi’ for the Hockey Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2023 at Project Bhawan in Dhurwa, Ranchi, Jharkhand.
  • The mascot named ‘Juhi’ is inspired by the popular elephant of Betla National Park.
  • Six countries – India, Japan, South Korea, China, Malaysia and Thailand – will participate in the championship to be held in Ranchi from October 27 to November 5.

Indian Army wins gold medal in Cambrian Patrol 2023 military exercise

  • Indian Army has won the gold medal in the Cambrian Patrol Competition 2023 international military exercise in Wales, UK.
  • A team of 3/5 Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) represented the Indian Army in the prestigious Exercise Cambrian Patrol in Wales, UK, the Army said.
  • The Indian Army team participated in the event and competed against a total of 111 teams, including 38 international teams representing special forces and prestigious regiments from across the world.

Former England captain Alastair Cook announces retirement

  • Former England captain Alastair Cook, the record Test run-scorer for his country, announced his retirement from professional cricket.
  • The 38-year-old left-handed opening batsman, who retired from international cricket in 2018, played his entire county career with Essex.
  • Cook was England’s Test captain from 2012 to 2017 and also captained in 69 One Day Internationals from 2010-14.
